Chapter 1, Episode 3

The Language of Possibility

Tuesday 23 March 2027, 8pm
Grove Gardens Chapel, Richmond

Behind every remarkable performance lies a world of musical thought. Ideas explored, traditions absorbed, familiar forms reconsidered — and the imagination to hear possibilities that others might overlook.

For our third episode, Through The Arch welcomes the internationally acclaimed David Gordon Trio, led by one of Britain’s most distinctive musical minds.

Pianist, composer and harpsichordist David Gordon has forged an extraordinary career spanning the BBC Proms, Ronnie Scott’s and The English Concert. His artistry draws upon a lifetime immersed in musical traditions, from Baroque and classical repertoire to contemporary jazz, finding fresh perspectives within the music rather than simply moving between genres.

Alongside bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Tom Hooper, that breadth of musical understanding becomes a shared creative language. Composition and improvisation inform one another; established ideas are explored afresh, and the most subtle musical exchanges can open unexpected directions.

What we hear is the music. What fascinates us is the imagination behind it.

At Through The Arch, we invite you to explore something of that creative world — the influences, musical decisions and instinctive conversations that give the trio its unmistakable identity.

About the David Gordon Trio

Across eight acclaimed albums, international performances and broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM, the trio has developed a musical voice of remarkable individuality.

Their Alexander Scriabin’s Ragtime Band received MOJO’s Jazz Album of the Year accolade, while projects such as FORAY, an imaginative exploration of Gabriel Fauré’s music, and In C (Live in London) reveal a fascination with the possibilities contained within musical form.

These are not simply exercises in reinterpretation, but explorations of how musical ideas can continue to evolve.

An Extraordinary Setting

Within the intimate surroundings of Grove Gardens Chapel, Richmond, Through The Arch offers an opportunity to experience this exceptional trio at close quarters.

A chance to listen more deeply, to encounter the creative thinking behind the performance, and to discover how a lifetime of musical exploration continues to find new expression.
